1. Historical Sites

Although primarily recognized for its golf courses and beautiful beaches, Isle of Palms has a rich history, deeply connected with other surrounding areas such as Charleston and Sullivan’s Island. Purchased in 1899 by J.S. Lawrence, it wasn’t until the late 19th century when Isle of Palms became a home to permanent residents. Once it was recognized how the island was truly a refuge from all that was happening in the surrounding areas, it quickly grew in popularity, however, this is not where the island’s historical significance begins.

Breach Inlet, settled between Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms, was the location of an attempted raid during the Revolutionary War, as well as the taking off point for the CSS Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy vessel during the Civil War. Today you can visit the Breach Inlet and get a first hand experience of the history of the area.

You may also enjoy visiting Fort Moultrie, a historic military site. Used from 1776-1947, this fort is the setting for many battles and has seen some of the most notable wars throughout American history. Today it has been restored to represent its participation in major historical events. You can also see Battery Logan when visiting the site, named after Captain WIlliam Logan of the 7th U.S. Infantry who died in 1877. The history of the area is rich and extends well beyond these two incredible sites; there is always more to see and experience when visiting Isle of Palms.
