Often when you are considering a trip to New York you think of New York City, a hub for all things fashion, finance, and culture, the city that never sleeps. However, New York City is not all that New York has to offer! Just five hours away is a grouping of charming little towns filled with history, culture, and natural beauty called Finger Lakes!
Finger Lakes is made up of eleven long and narrow lakes, all roughly running parallel to one another, hence the label of fingers! This area is a step away from the consistent hustle and bustle of New York City, into a more relaxing environment filled with scenic views and historical significance. With deep ties to America’s roots, Finger Lakes serves as an important landmark, specifically for abolitionist and women’s rights movements. Located on Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes' largest, is Seneca Falls, home to the very first Women’s Rights Convention in 1848.
Although there is plenty of history and cultural significance to be found in the Finger Lakes, that is not all they have to offer! The excitement and adventure available to explore is endless. Here are some of the best things to do in Finger Lakes, NY for your next long weekend vacation.

Finger Lakes is known for their natural beauty and scenic views, with no shortage of enchanting locations to choose from, you will want to spend some time reconnecting with nature. To do so you can visit any number of state parks and waterfalls in Finger Lakes. With four state parks to choose from (Watkins Glen State Park, Taughannock Falls State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park, and Letchworth State Park) and an endless number of waterfalls, hiking trails, and gorges to visit, there is more than enough natural beauty to go around!

This is the park everyone talks about, and for good reason. Located right in the village of Watkins Glen, you'll find 19 waterfalls cutting through a 400-foot-deep gorge. The main trail runs 1.5 miles one-way, climbing 500 feet over stone paths and 800 steps. The entire trail takes 2-3 hours for the round-trip. If you want to explore the entire park, try to visit before 10 AM on summer weekends, or prepare to circle the parking lot. Start at the Main Entrance on Route 14 for the uphill climb, or grab the $6 shuttle to the Upper Entrance and hike down. The North Rim Trail (1.5 mi, 410 ft elevation) and the South Rim Trail (1.25 mi, 430 ft elevation) connect via a suspension bridge for the loop. Dogs aren't allowed on the Gorge Trail, but can join you on the rim trails.

Taughannock Falls drops 215 feet and is 33 feet taller than Niagara. It's the highest single-drop waterfall east of the Rockies, sitting in an amphitheater carved into 400-foot shale cliffs. The main trail is the easiest way to reach the waterfall in the region: 0.75 miles one-way, nearly flat, and wheelchair accessible. It takes 45 minutes to an hour at a casual pace, ending at the base where you can look up at the bowl-shaped rock walls. If you want more challenge, the North and South Rim Trails combine for a 3-mile loop with 495 feet of elevation gain. You'll get top-down views of the gorge and falls. The North Rim has more overlooks, plus an old railroad bridge.

The Rim Trail is easier at 0.82 miles with moderate elevation, connecting with the Gorge Trail for a loop. Most people miss the upper park, where the Lake Treman Loop offers 1.3 miles with just 160 feet of elevation gain. If you want to get on the water, you can rent boats or kayaks at Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake, or Keuka Lake. Several marinas also offer paddleboard rentals, fishing gear, sailboats, and powerboats. You've also got options for horseback riding, mountain biking, and boat cruises.
