Hilton Head Island offers miles of white-sand beaches, maritime forests, and well-preserved natural landscapes, making it one of the Southeast's most beloved coastal escapes. The island has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and many visitors find that the shoulder seasons, like spring and fall, offer the most comfortable experience, with pleasant temperatures and lighter crowds.
Getting here, you can fly into Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) directly, or land at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) and make the easy 45-minute drive up the coast. If you're road-tripping, Charlotte is about 4 hours away, and Atlanta is about 5.
Once you arrive, the island's natural beauty sets the tone for everything else. Here's a relaxing weekend itinerary to help you make the most of it.
The natural beauty of the Hilton Head resort inspired this relaxing weekend getaway itinerary. Stress will melt away as you soak in the sand, sun, and beauty.

If you're driving in from the mainland, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge makes for a seamless first stop. It sits right before the bridge onto Hilton Head, so there's no backtracking involved. Free to enter, the refuge spans over 4,000 acres of salt marsh, maritime forest, and tidal creeks with flat, well-maintained trails that are rarely crowded even in peak season. It's a quiet, unhurried way to ease into island time before you've even unpacked.

Once you've settled into your rental, head down to Coligny Beach Park for a sunset walk. Free to enter with clean restrooms, showers, and a wide, flat stretch of sand, it's one of the island's most welcoming beach access points. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months, and a beach play area makes it an easy stop for families. Walk south along the shoreline, let the week fall away, and stay as long as the sky keeps putting on a show.

When you're ready for dinner, resort casual sundresses, linen slacks, and a button-down shirt give you the most flexibility. Reservations are a good idea on Friday evenings, especially in season.
Cafe Al Dente in Coligny Plaza is a local favorite for fresh pasta and Italian cuisine, warm and unhurried in the best way. If you prefer something livelier, The Big Bamboo, right in the same plaza, brings in live music most nights with a relaxed indoor-outdoor setup that captures everything good about a Hilton Head beach bar. For something a step up, Nunzio Restaurant + Bar on New Orleans Road is consistently ranked among the island's best, with handmade pasta, an excellent wine list, and a three-course early tasting menu from 4:30–5:15 p.m. that's worth knowing about. If you'd rather settle into your rental for a quiet night in, that's a perfectly reasonable call.

Saturday is for getting outside, and Sea Pines Forest Preserve is where you want to spend the morning. Located inside the Sea Pines gated community at the island's southern tip, about a 15-minute drive from Coligny, this 605-acre protected natural space feels like a world apart from the resort activity surrounding it. Non-guests pay a $8–$9 per car gate fee (cash only) at the Sea Pines entrance; once inside, the preserve itself is free.
Insect repellent is a must, given the island's humidity. Swimming is not permitted anywhere in the preserve, and bicycles are not allowed on the walking trails. Park them at the racks near the entrance before heading in. If you'd like to bike to Sea Pines rather than drive, both Sea Pines Resort Bike Rentals and Peddling Pelican Cruiser offer easy cruiser rentals. For something more guided, H2O Sports at Sea Pines Beach Club runs kayak tours and eco-excursions from around $30–$40 per person.
Before you head in, it's worth stopping at Lowcountry Produce Market & Café for a picnic lunch. They take pre-orders and carry local cheeses, fresh bread, and seasonal produce. If you're going on a Saturday morning between spring and mid-November, the Farmers and Makers Market at The Shops at Sea Pines Center is just a short detour and worth a look.

After a morning on the trails, Truffles Cafe is the natural next stop just a few minutes from the preserve entrance and exactly what you want after time outside. The menu covers upscale salads, sandwiches, and burgers in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Casual dress is completely at home here. From Truffles, it's a short drive down to Harbour Town at the very tip of Sea Pines the iconic marina anchored by the candy-striped lighthouse you've likely seen on postcards. Climb to the top of the Harbour Town Lighthouse and Museum for sweeping views of Calibogue Sound and, on a clear day, Daufuskie Island across the water. Admission is $5 per person. Afterward, settle in at the marina. Scott's Fish Market is a local staple for fresh seafood with a harborside view, and you can watch the boats drift in as the afternoon light softens. It's one of those Hilton Head moments that stays with you.

Before heading home, Sunday deserves one more slow morning at the water. Driessen Beach Park, located on the mid-island about 10 minutes north of Coligny, offers free admission, easy parking, and a quieter, more open stretch of sand a nice contrast to the Friday evening crowds. Come early, walk the shoreline, and let the weekend do its final work before the drive back.

Two good options depending on your mood: Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe at Palmetto Bay Marina is a longtime local favorite, think shrimp and grits, generous eggs Benedict, and the kind of unhurried service that belongs on a Sunday morning. It fills up quickly, so arrive early. If you're after something with a waterfront terrace and a slightly more elevated menu, ELA's On the Water at Shelter Cove Harbour does avocado toast, smoked salmon, and eggs Benedict overlooking the marina. Either way, time your beach walk so you arrive at brunch relaxed and a little sun-warmed.
On your way out, a stroll through Coligny Plaza is an easy last stop — good boutiques, local shops, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes for a gentle transition back to the real world.
