When we plan a vacation, we usually anticipate the best-case scenario for the weather. Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. Southwest Michigan has its fair share of sunny days, but rain certainly isn't uncommon, even in the summer months. But don't change your vacation destination just yet! This beautiful region on Lake Michigan has so much to offer, even when the weather takes a turn. Here are some of the best activities to enjoy on a rainy day in Southwest Michigan.

Learn Something New at a Museum

When you start to see the rain clouds rolling in, buy yourself some tickets to a local museum. You never know what you could learn from a small-town historical society or museum dedicated to a niche interest. These three transportation-oriented museums are local to Southwest Michigan:

Michigan Maritime Museum

Up the Lake Michigan coast in South Haven, you'll find this nautical museum. The Michigan Maritime Museum features exhibits on things like commercial fishing on the Great Lakes, passenger steamboats, and antique motors. If the rain clears up, be sure to participate in one of their on-water experiences, too.

Air Zoo

If you're okay with taking a drive, the Air Zoo is worth a visit! It's in Kalamazoo, still technically in Southwest Michigan, but if you're staying on the lake shore, allow for at least an hour to get there. The Air Zoo is home to world-class exhibits (it's affiliated with the Smithsonian) and showcases over 100 air and space artifacts. You can also try your hand at a full-motion flight simulator!

Harbor Country Museum of History + Rail

The Harbor Country Museum of History + Rail might not be as big as the Air Zoo, but this small-town museum still makes a strong case for a spot on your itinerary. Their exhibits center on the history of rail in the area and feature dozens of artifacts, archival photography, and even model trains. Some exhibits (like old rail cars) are outside, so make sure to bring an umbrella!

Revive Spa in St. Joseph offers a slew of services, including classic massages and facials. However, they have plenty of specialties if you want to try something new, too. Find out if vibroacoustic therapy is your cup of tea, or immerse yourself in floatation therapy to really relax.
