When we plan a vacation, we usually anticipate the best-case scenario for the weather. Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. Southwest Michigan has its fair share of sunny days, but rain certainly isn't uncommon, even in the summer months. But don't change your vacation destination just yet! This beautiful region on Lake Michigan has so much to offer, even when the weather takes a turn. Here are some of the best activities to enjoy on a rainy day in Southwest Michigan.
Learn Something New at a Museum
When you start to see the rain clouds rolling in, buy yourself some tickets to a local museum. You never know what you could learn from a small-town historical society or museum dedicated to a niche interest. These three transportation-oriented museums are local to Southwest Michigan:
Michigan Maritime Museum

260 Dyckman Avenue, South Haven, MI 49090
Up the Lake Michigan coast in South Haven, you'll find this nautical museum. The Michigan Maritime Museum features exhibits on things like commercial fishing on the Great Lakes, passenger steamboats, and antique motors. If the rain clears up, be sure to participate in one of their on-water experiences, too.
Air Zoo

3101 E. Milham Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49002
If you're okay with taking a drive, the Air Zoo is worth a visit! It's in Kalamazoo, still technically in Southwest Michigan, but if you're staying on the lake shore, allow for at least an hour to get there. The Air Zoo is home to world-class exhibits (it's affiliated with the Smithsonian) and showcases over 100 air and space artifacts. You can also try your hand at a full-motion flight simulator!
Harbor Country Museum of History + Rail

530 S Whittaker St, New Buffalo, MI 49117
The Harbor Country Museum of History + Rail might not be as big as the Air Zoo, but this small-town museum still makes a strong case for a spot on your itinerary. Their exhibits center on the history of rail in the area and feature dozens of artifacts, archival photography, and even model trains. Some exhibits (like old rail cars) are outside, so make sure to bring an umbrella!
Refresh at the Revive Spa

313 Main St, St. Joseph, MI 49085
Use this rainy day for some "me time." There's no better way to pamper yourself than with a visit to a local spa. Revive Spa in St. Joseph offers a slew of services, including classic massages and facials. However, they have plenty of specialties if you want to try something new, too. Find out if vibroacoustic therapy is your cup of tea, or immerse yourself in floatation therapy to really relax.
Get a Sweet Treat at Black Currant Bakehouse

9911 Town Line Ave, Union Pier, MI 49129
Make sure to treat yourself! As the rain hammers down, take refuge in this small-batch bakery. Black Currant Bakehouse serves decadent baked goods, from classic donuts to ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls. You can also get your coffee fix here and grab a sandwich for the road! This bakery makes gorgeous cakes as well, but if you want one of those, you'll need to order ahead.
Try Your Luck at Four Winds Casino

11111 Wilson Rd, New Buffalo, MI 49117
Four Winds Casino is one of the most popular rainy day attractions in Southwest Michigan (and northern Indiana, too). The New Buffalo location has slot machines, lots of table games, and a high-end restaurant serving perfectly-aged steaks. Imagine yourself winning at the blackjack table, then heading down to the restaurant for a delicious dinner. The casino also holds events throughout the week, including DJ sets, live music, and trivia nights. Sounds like a great time, regardless of the weather!
Find Your New Favorite Wine

9145 Union Pier Rd, Union Pier, MI 49129
Spend your rainy day in Michigan finding your new favorite wine at St. Julian Winery. This winery has been in operation for over 100 years and is one of the most celebrated in Michigan. Stop by their Union Pier location and try up to six wines, spirits, or ciders on their tasting menu. The best part? There's no reservation required, unless you're bringing a group of more than eight. Once you've found something you like, head to their retail store to shop their collection of fine wines and handcrafted spirits.
Get Creative at the Box Factory for the Arts

1101 Broad Street, St. Joseph, MI 49085
The Box Factory for the Arts is one of the tried-and-true rainy day attractions in St. Joseph. There are so many things to do here, from attending concerts to checking out their four galleries. But if you really want to make the most of your day, sign up for a workshop. Visitors can take classes on painting and drawing, or try out cyanotype, a historic photographic process that creates whimsical, blue-toned images. Be sure to watch their website for updated class schedules and events!
